Schenectady Parents of Gifted and Talented Students?

Is your child gifted and talented and attending a Schenectady City School? Are you interested in helping to forming a group that will advocate for GT kids?

What levels are you interested in? My children are in 1st and 6th grade and the 6th grader is in Young Scholars.

Well, I'm thinking k-12.

A: The district has made a commitment to the education of students in an Advanced Academic Program for all grade levels. For the past two years we have had a full time administrator working to improve these programs and develop a comprehensive K-12 approach. He has been leading a task force in Strategic Planning to address Targeted Academic Programs as well.

We fully recognize the Young Scholars program is good but it is not enough as there are many children who are talented in areas other than Math and ELA. The Board has also estabished a sub-committee called the Academic Achievement Committee that discusses these types of issues. The Task Force and the Academic Achievement Committee are always looking for new ideas and new members. Perhaps your concerns can be addressed more thoroughly if you can get others like yourselves involved in one of these efforts.

If our district is going to develop and implement a strong, worthwhile Advanced Academic Program, it will take a community effort, not divisive separation. Together we can build the quality program our students deserve.

I agree that working together is key to making this successful. I am glad to see that the district is committed to working on this. It is very surprising to find that a task force has been in place for k-12 for two years. I have asked and emailed many people in this district and have been told by them that the gifted program doesn't start till 4th grade. So I am pleased and surprised to find out this information.

How do I contact these committees? Are they interested in working with parents to try to implement this? I would be more then happy to volunteer time to either of these committees. Can you please PM me contact information?

Not to late...have just gotten started

I was thinking of starting a chapter of AGATE for Schenectady City Schools. But really what i think would be more productive is a not for profit parent orginization that works on getting grants for the gifted program in the schenectady city schools?

Sounds great. How do we get started thou? Are you familiar with the Young Scholars Program (4th-8th grade)?

I have read about it on-line. My son, who is in 3rd this year, will most likely be attending next year when he is in 4th grade. He has already taken the SCAT test for CTY's on-line classes and scored in the 5th grade range in both math and ELA. I think they want him to retake the test though, which doesn't make much scene.... sort of a waste of resources.

It looks like a good program, although it seems to me it should be more then just one day for some kids. But I have learned in the past few years how woefully inadequate Gifted Education is in the country, it's sort of remarkable they have anything, and I've heard it's a really good program to boot! So, unlike a lot of people we are lucky to be in a district that is Gifted friendly.

I think we need to set up a meeting and bring some ideas.
